SunEdison said Friday that it sold its planned Spectrum Solar Project in Nevada to Southern Co. and Turner Renewable Energy.

Terms of the sale of the 30 megawatt solar photovoltaic power plant were not disclosed.

SunEdison said it plans to begin construction on the project in October, on a 311-acre site in Clark County, Nev., with commercial operation expected to begin in the second quarter of 2013. In addition to developing the plant, SunEdison will handle its ongoing operations and maintenance.

The Spectrum Solar Project is the largest direct current solar tracking array of its kind, according to the companies. Tracking technology directs solar panels as the sun moves across the sky.

Nevada Power Co., doing business as Las Vegas-based NV Energy, is buying electricity generated by the Spectrum plant under a 25-year power purchase agreement.

This is the second SunEnergy solar plant it has developed and sold to Atlanta-based Southern Co. and Turner Renewable Energy. In June, Southern and Turner bought SunEdison's 20MW Apex facility, also located in Clark County, Nev., that went into full commercial operation this quarter.

Southern and Turner partnered in early 2010 to develop renewable energy projects in the U.S., with their first acquisition being the 30MW Cimarron solar facility near Raton, N.M., which was built by Tempe, Ariz.-based First Solar Inc.
